Department of Geriatrics

Department of Geriatrics (Cadre's Wards) which is an Xi'an priority medical specialty, was established in 1986 and is a first founded and comprehensive diagnosis and treatment unit which is largest in scale and has most complete specialty setting with fully-equipped facilities in Xi'an municipal hospitals, and has a high level of medical service. It owns an independent 5-story building and 110 beds with net use area of ​​8 square meters of each bed. Each ward is equipped with complete hardware facilities, including air conditioner, television, shower, sofa, hot water, and refrigerator. The Department of Geriatrics is divided into five professional wards, 1 Geriatrics Research Center, 1 Clinic for Elderly Cadres and 1 Cadre's Health Care Department, and has 6 disciplines including Neurology Department, Cardiology Department, Respiratory Department, Gastroenterology Department, Endocrinology Department and Department of Oncology, mainly receives and treats retired cadres who began to work before 1949, and in-service cadres of bureau-director level or above. It also undertakes the long-term health care works of cadres in the city, and is an important base used for the diagnosis, treatment and physical examination of all levels of cadres.
After twenty-seven years of development and talent reserves, the Department of Geriatrics has achieved substantial development in discipline, equipments, diagnosis and treatment, teaching, scientific research and other aspects under the leadership of several terms of directors and with the joint efforts of medical staff. In the past three years, its bed utilization rates up to 98% with annual revenue growth of more than 15%, and was awarded "Xi'an Example Post of Economic and Technological Innovation for Workers" by the Municipal Trade Union Federation in 2010. It was awarded "Shaanxi Advanced Collectives for Health Care Works of Cadres" in 2012, was recommended as "Civilization Unit for Respecting the Old" by Xi'an municipal government in 2012, and has been listed in 2013 waiting for provincial acceptance. It has realized achievements of both social and economic benefits, and the development of the department has received strong supports (policy and funding) from provincial and municipal governments, relevant units which take the leadership, the Department of Health and Health Bureau in charge and hospitals in recent years. Department of Geriatrics was listed as Xi'an priority medical specialty Science Geriatrics specialist medical advantages in 2009, established a Geriatrics Research Center in 2012, and carried out the geriatric ward expansion project which has been approved by Xi'an Municipal Government in 2013.
The Department of Geriatrics now has 103 doctors and nursing staff, of which 22 have senior titles and 30 have master degrees. It has formed a professional team of gerontology which has professional and strong technical skills and high medical ethics and covers comprehensive disciplines. For personnel training, talent introduction, equipment purchase, sub-discipline construction, basic research and other aspects, the department has used translational medicine model which combines the clinical treatment and basic research,  aims at building a modern geriatric center integrated with medical, teaching, scientific research function, and summarized the following five research and development directions according to advantages and characteristics of geriatrics, the development trends and the present situation of geriatrics in our country, that are the diagnosis and treatment of multiple organ failure in the elderly, correlation study on cardiovascular and cerebral diseases in the elderly, the clinical application of ventilator support-associated technologies and digestive endoscope in the elderly, and basic science research related to the elderly.
Cadre Ward 3 is a ward for respiratory diseases of the Department of Geriatrics, mainly engaged in the diagnosis and treatment of pneumonia, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, interstitial lung disease, lung tumor, etc. It is gradually carrying out the monitoring and rescue work for critically ill patients, promoting of nasal intubation under the guidance of fibrobronchoscope, and promoting the techniques, including sequential non-invasive and invasive ventilation to the treatment of respiratory failure, spray inhalation mechanical aid expectoration, minimally invasive type of closed thoracic drainage,  spray inhalation with assisted respiration by invasive ventilator, noninvasive positive pressure ventilation for improving  of pulmonary edema, bronchoscopic alveolus lavage, sleep respiratory monitoring, intermediate frequency electric therapy-assisted functional exercises for respiratory muscles, etc. It is now equipped with 6 invasive ventilators and high-end non-invasive ventilators, 1 fiberoptic bronchoscope, 1 mechanical expectoration machine, 2 intermediate frequency therapy apparatus, 1 respiratory sleep monitor, and 6 multifunctional monitors.
Cadre Ward 4 is a ward for neuroendocrine diseases in the elderly which is mainly engaged in the diagnosis and treatment of various neurological diseases and endocrine and metabolic disorders in the elderly, including cerebrovascular disease, dementia, epilepsy or seizures, Parkinson's disease, motor neuron disease, various types of headaches, diabetes, thyroid diseases and the intervention treatment of cerebrovascular disease, and is particularly good at the comprehensive diagnosis and treatment of geriatric diseases, the early treatment of cerebral infarction and cerebral hemorrhage and the treatment of sequelae, cardiogenic cerebral embolism, epilepsy or seizures, diabetes and acute and chronic complications (diabetic nephropathy, diabetic peripheral neuropathy, diabetic foot, etc.), the elderly and the elderly hypothyroidism and multiple organ failure in the elderly. The department has 1 neural functional reconstruction system (hemiplegia treatment, swallowing function treatment), 1 brain ultrasound treatment instrument, 1 EEG bionic electrical stimulation of high-end instrument, 1 high-end non-invasive ventilator, 2 intermediate frequency ultrasound therapy devices, 4 multi-functional monitors, 1 insulin pumps and other equipment.
The 5th Ward of the Cardre Ward is aged digestive cancer ward with professional and technical work comprising: comprehensive diagnosis and treatment of age-related diseases, especially being good at common digestive disorders, severe diseases and the chemotherapy and combined therapy of neoplastic diseases, parenteral and enteral nutrition, peripheral venous and central venous nutrition, nasogastric nutrition, cancer chemotherapy. The department can conduct optimal multidisciplinary comprehensive treatment. Such as gastrointestinal bleeding, jaundice, ulcer disease, liver cirrhosis, pancreatitis, acute and chronic gastritis, functional gastrointestinal disease, acute and chronic constipation, esophagitis, gastric cancer, colon cancer, liver cancer, a variety of metastatic cancer, gastrointestinal polyps, cacotrophy. We mainly conduct the treatment of gastrointestinal endoscopy, the treatment of  duodenoscope, especially painless diagnosis and treatment of gastrointestinal endoscopy. At present, we have 1 high-end non-invasive ventilator, 2 intermediate frequency ultrasound therapy devices, 3 multi-function monitors, and 1water purification ozone colon hydrotherapy machine.
The academic leader of the Department of Gerontology is the chief physician, Gao Hua (chief physician of the Department of Neurology ), who is a clinical graduate, and now Gao Hua is the director of the Department of Gerontology, the director of the 4th Ward of the Cardre Ward, the director of Gerontology Study Room, and the Adjunct Professor of Xi'an Medical University. Deputy director of Xi'an Medical Association Geriatrics Branch and committee member of  Neurology Branch; standing committee member of Shaanxi Provincial Rehabilitation Medicine Association Cerebrovascular Professional Standing Committee; committee member of Shaanxi Province Medical Association Neurology Branch, Geriatrics Society and Diabetes Branch; director of  Shaanxi Province Geriatric Care Association; consultant expert of Xi'an Cadre Health Care. Gao Hua has been engaged in clinical work for 28 years. Gao specializes in vascular disease, epilepsy, dementia, dizziness, diagnosis and treatment of Parkinson's disease and senile disease and Gao is especially good at individual treatment of cerebrovascular disease and epilepsy, as well as diagnosis and treatment of the elderly multi-system disease. Gao Hua has a wealth of clinical experience in diagnosis and treatment of TIA, cardiogenic cerebral embolism, status epilepticus, senile dementia and early discovery of senile disease, etc. Published more than 10 papers, and won the third prize of Xi’an Municipal Science and Technology Progress Award. Liu Yongguo won the Shaanxi Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award and the Xi’an Municipal Science and Technology Progress Award. Zhao Kun, director of the 3rd Ward of the Cardre Ward, chief physician of the Department of Respiration, professor of Xi'an Medical University, committee member of Xi'an Respiratory Society, and committee member of Xi'an Critical Care Medicine Committee with  firm clinical foundation. Zhao specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of severe respiratory difficulty, bedside bronchoscopy, respiratory failure with mechanical ventilation and comprehensive treatment of geriatric diseases, and established elderly respiratory critical care room. The Department of Gerontology earnestly implements the medical and health system tasks; actively implements clinical path management; carries out high-quality care service; actively carries out partner assistance work; actively conducts weekly rounds work and visits cadre’s sanatoriums and nursing homes to provide free clinic and health care knowledge preach on a regular basis; provides patients with booking clinic services online and by phone; and implements single disease management. In recent years, specialist overall strength has significantly increased, taking the leading position in the gerontology specialty within the province and city.
